Continuing to use fossil fuels for our energy needs makes little sense. Burning coal, natural gas, and gasoline is bad for our environment, is energy inefficient, and makes us reliant on other countries (often unfriendly) for our supply. Also, even as our energy consumption continues, the supply of fossil fuels is quickly being used up. Easily within our lifetimes we'll run out but, before that happens we'll see higher fuel costs and perhaps more wars.
We've had better alternatives for decades but burning fossil fuels has been cheaper and more government supported because of lobbyists. But now with the aternative energy technologies becoming more widestream and the price of oil increasing, it actually makes more sense economically to switch to renewable energy sources as well. When you figure in the long-term energy production, the price-per-kilowatt-hour is even lower; examples include hydro-electric dams, solar panels, and wind mills.
We need to provide all new energy demands through renewable sources and start replacing old fossil fuel plants. Unfortunately, since changing our energy production is such a big investment, it has to be done on the governmental level. We need to support renewable energy where-ever we can and increase awareness. One good way to increase awareness and start the conversation is with the shirts below. $3 is donated to MAREA for each shirt sold.
This is a scam! I ran across this eBook a while ago and was intrigued at the idea: cheap affordable DIY solar panels and wind generation. Of course, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Although their claims are technically true - you can create your own solar panels & wind generator but they don't tell you that it'll be so inefficient that there's no way that you'd have enough space on your roof to produce enough power to really do any good. They also don't tell you that to get enough wind to produce sufficient electricity, you'd have to build a tower to get the windmill higher than your house and other surrounding things.
This link to nlcpr.com goes into a lot more detail about Earth4Energy but I will try to add some useful Solar/Wind articles in the future!
